Yoga that fits your body

Functional Yin Yoga in the Paul Grilley tradition

Light as a Feather

Yin Yoga is on every schedule these days – and means something different almost everywhere. I teach it functionally, following Paul Grilley's approach. Which means: there is no perfect pose you have to fit into. There is only yours.

Every skeleton is built differently. The same pose looks different on every body – and that is exactly how it should be. We're not looking for the aesthetically perfect shape, but for the target area: the part of your body the pose is meant to stimulate. The moment you feel it, you've arrived – and you stay there for three to five minutes. That is where the stretch happens, and because you stay so long, tissue that felt tight before gradually gives way too.

And then comes the moment I teach for: afterwards your body feels soft and elastic. You get up light as a feather.

Yin Yoga in Munich – a long-held butterfly pose

No two bodies are alike.

For every body there is a variation in which the target area becomes tangible. The butterfly, for instance, we practise seated, reclined or lying all the way down, with the legs on a bolster or blankets under the knees – until you find the spot it's all about. Age and flexibility make no difference here: a stiff back simply needs a different variation than a supple one. Every body is built differently – and that is a wonderful thing.

The three principles

Find your depth

Go only as deep as feels right for you. We want to rest in the posture for several minutes – so look for the depth you can settle into, not the furthest one.

Become still

Once the posture is found, everything may grow quiet – the breath, the movement, the thoughts. There is nothing left to adjust. And if your body invites you further later on, you follow that invitation.

Stay a while

You may stay for three to five minutes. Only over that time does the posture reach fascia, ligaments and joint capsules – layers a short, forceful stretch never touches at all.

Also on offer: Gentle Vinyasa

In motion, then stillness

Alongside Yin Yoga, I also teach gentle vinyasa. The class begins with strengthening but manageable postures that you are given time in – soft transitions at the pace of your breath, not power yoga. At the end it turns to yin, and everything comes to rest.

Yin and yang complement each other.

Neither exists without the other; each depends on the other. In yang the muscles work; in yin the layers beneath them get their turn – fascia, ligaments, joint capsules. That is why yin complements anything demanding: vinyasa just as much as running, lifting or any other sport.

How it works

Your class at home

One click, no download

We meet on Google Meet. You'll get a link by email beforehand, click it and you're there – no software to install, no account to create. A laptop, a tablet or even a phone will do.

I can see you

Set the camera so I can see you from the side – I'll tell you at the start whether it works. That way I can see how you're lying in the pose and suggest the variation that suits your build.

Your yoga teacher – at home in Munich

Vanessa Winkler

Yoga has changed my life – and I'd love to share that experience with you. Munich is where I'm at home, and I teach live online, right across Europe – and in person. Whether you're just starting out or have practised for years: with me you'll find a safe space for mindful yoga – for your body, exactly as it is today.

My focus is Yin Yoga, complemented by Gentle Vinyasa – both rooted in traditional yoga philosophy. I teach functionally: you don't adapt to the pose, the pose adapts to your build. That's why I prefer small groups – I want to see how each of you moves.
